Growing up in the harsh outback country between Cobar and Ivanhoe in western NSW, John learnt to drive at an early age in the families Lend Lease Chevrolet farm truck.

Carting stock and wool to the train at Cobar, where in the sweltering heat it was all hand unloaded, then making the eighty-mile return trip back to the family property. It was on the return leg that John’s father would have a couple of ales giving the youngster a chance to work his way through the crash box piloting the Chev home.
