The strength of that statement was tried and tested on the 2 April 1979, when five brave truck owner-drivers stood up for their rights as they blocked the ribbon stretch of the Hume Highway across Razorback Range 50 kilometres south of Sydney – which in turn started a chain reaction around the country.
What followed during the next nine days was a united stand across the nation, with thousands of trucks blocking major interstate routes around Sydney and other mainland capitals. It only took five gutsy men led by protagonist Ted ‘Greendog’ Stevens – in unison with Barry Grimson, Spenser Watling, Jack Hibbert and Colin Bird – to fuel a rollercoaster of discontent that blocked the nation’s road transport supply routes.
