Transport history tells us that Saurer, the Swiss truck maker, wanted to expand its markets, which saw it issue a licence in 1931 to the Armstrong Whitworth Company in the United Kingdom, to assemble its trucks in Newcastle - Saurers had gained a good reputation for reliability and robustness in the UK. These trucks would be named Armstrong-Saurer and based on the Saurer C Type, 5BL model, using parts supplied from Saurer’s factory in France. The production of these Armstrong-Saurer trucks ceased in 1937.
