Kyabram Mack Muster Part 3
1 min read

In this episode of TruckStop we round out our visit to the Kyabram Mack Muster: Steve Parton from Strathalbyn, SA, finally got to a Mack muster with his 1982 R600 after a restoration that took nine years - the scroll-work and signwriting were only completed a week before the show. The R Model, with its single chassis rail and 38,000lb diffs, appealed to Steve as being economical and practical, as he intended to put it to work on grain cartage. Originally a Mayne Nickless truck, Steve has tried to keep the truck with its E6-350 2-valve Mack engine and 10-speed gearbox, as close to factory as he could, just adding on the bunk. Gavin Spence tells TruckStop about his 1989 Mack Value-Liner which, when new, went to Stepmore’s of Ballarat, VIC, and was green and white. It has seen many configurations over the years, including as a prime mover and as a tipper. Now under the ownership of Gavin Spence, the hardest work this Value-Liner with a 350hp, 4-valve Mack engine, 15-speed O/D Roadranger, and 38,000lb Mack diffs sitting on camelback suspension, has to do is keep the dust off his shed floor. With nearly 70 years of driving experience under his belt (and still going), Archie Baines, who has 52 old trucks, settled on bringing his 1964 B Model to display at the muster. The factory-built, single-drive has a 711cu. inch Thermodyne under the hood, running through a quad box and high-speed diffs. This B Model started its working life as a log truck in the Yarra Glen area of Victoria, before going to Grafton, NSW. Archie bought the B Model in 2000 and proceeded to bring it back to new – and the paint work looks as good today as when he put it on 24 years ago.
